Pediatric Cast Technician (Part-time)

This is a part-time position, for one day per week, hours approximately 8:00AM – 5:00PM.
The Cast Technician is responsible for providing support to corresponding clinics by assisting patients and their family members before, during, and after an appointment. The Cast Technician is also responsible for assisting physicians and nurses with care and treatment to patients, including casting, bracing and application of traction.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Casting pediatric patients, a large portion of the population with complex fractures.
- Properly fits and applies pre-operative braces, crutches, and other soft goods; assists in preparation for and application of casts and orthopedic appliances; changes dressings; removes sutures, casts, and splints.
- Assists physicians and nurses with orthopedic procedures, including wound care, aspirations, minor surgical procedures, fracture reductions, etc.; instructs patients in cast and traction care and the use of orthopedic appliances.
- Assists with preparing patients for examination and assisting physician during treatment, examinations, and testing of patients.
- Assists with obtaining vital signs, documents chief complaint and all actions taken.
- Assists with obtaining patient history, assists physicians, residents and/or licensed nursing personnel.
- Assist with performing basic patient procedures, sets up exam/procedure rooms including instruments for minor procedures, preparations may include administering medications (excluding IV) under direct supervision of a physician.
- Ensure all related reports, labs and information is filed and available in patients’ medical records prior to their appointment.
- Document in Electronic Medical Record patient-related communication and interventions.
- Assists with patient phone calls for appointment reminders.
- Prepares, restocks, and disinfects examination rooms, procedure rooms, lab area, and all other patient care areas.
- Sterilize Medical Equipment.
- Remains current with orthopedic trends, care and supplies.
- Maintains patient confidentiality and HIPAA compliance according to Federal guidelines.
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Knowledge of the heath care field, medical terminology, and medical office protocol.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize work flow.
- Knowledge of basic computer software programs: MS Office and EMR.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Able to interact with others with diplomacy and tact.
- Skilled in understanding patient education needs and effectively communicate that information to patients.
- Ability to project a pleasant and professional image.
- Knowledge and ability to work with special needs patients.
- Ability to learn and retain information regarding patient care procedures.
- Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or federal, state and local standards.
- Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards.
Education or Equivalency
- Orthopedic Technologist Certification or Diploma OR Medical Assistant Certificate required
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Bilingual-Spanish/English preferred
Experience Requirements:
- Previous medical assistant clinic experience preferred
- Previous pediatric experience preferred
- Previous Orthopedic experience required
FTE Status/Scheduled Hours of Work:
- This is a part-time position, for one day per week, hours approximately 8:00AM – 5:00PM.
