The Risk and Employee Health Registered Nurse (RN) supports DMG Clinic(s), the Risk Management (Risk) department, related claims and grievances, the Infection Control Program, and the Employee Health Program. This role collaborates with Valleywise Employee Health, as well as with the Regulatory and Compliance Programs. This role partners with the CMO to manage the Infection Control Program and provides guidance regarding adherence to the Arizona Administrative Code (AAC) Healthcare Institutions Licensing section.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • As directed by the CRO, investigate incidents and claims by reviewing medical records, documentation, and interviewing the person(s) involved including physicians, patients, and witnesses.
  • Ensure accurate and detailed records and files involving incidents and investigations.
  • Rotate taking call with Risk Team member as scheduled or needed. Call hours are 7am to 7pm.
  • Make recommendations about the management of claims and other liability situations based upon the clinical investigations performed.
  • in conducting educational programs, presentations, and education in risk prevention and control and infection control.
  • Assist in the investigation and evaluation of professional liability occurrences and claims under the direction of the CRO.
  • Perform medical research, attending depositions, witness preparations, and other legal proceedings.
  • Oversee the Infection Control Program for the organization and participate and provide guidance on quality and safety within the organizations
  • Oversee the Infection Control Program for DMG Clinic(s), in collaborating with Children’s Rehabilitative Services leadership.
  • Oversee the Employee Health Program including policy creation and revision and ensure compliance with guidelines and expectations for employees, independent contractors, temporary staff, volunteers, and students.
  • Investigate and recommend required actions from reported exposure to a communicable disease.
  • Assist the organization when needed with external department policies and procedures.
  • Development and implementation of clinical risk assessments.
  • Perform monitoring and internal auditing of clinical areas subject to review under an Arizona Department of Health and Human Services Survey in coordination with the Compliance Department.
  • Participate in DMG disaster planning with collaboration from the Business Continuity Senior Leadership team.
  • Provide regulatory interpretation and guidance pertinent to a clinical setting and Arizona Department of Health and Human Services state OTC licensure.
  • Implementation/monitoring of clinical corrective action plans.
  • Support Quality and Safety Committee activities, including but not limited to, the sample medication program, medication management, and the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) recall process.
  • Provide support to Policy Procedure Review Committee (PPRC) activities, documentation, and meetings.
  • Assist with the patient complaint and grievance process, action items, documentation, and record keeping.
  • Maintain compliance with company policies and procedures.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Understanding/compliance of HIPAA and HIE laws and regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Must be well organized and detail-oriented
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices
  • Ability to operate standard office machines and equipment, including telephones, computers, copy machines, fax machines, calculators, scanners and shredders
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or federal, state and local standards
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA, and other federal, state, and local standards

Education or Equivalency - please indicate on resume:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related health or management filed required.
  • Registered Nurse license required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing Preferred


Experience Requirements:

  • Minimum of 5 years hospital experience required
  • Minimum of 2 years compliance, risk management, and regulatory experience preferred.
  • Healthcare leadership experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical malpractice law, insurance policy law, health care law and practices, and government regulations preferred.

FTE Status/Scheduled Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening, weekend and on-call work may be required.
